Staff Picks: 90th Academy Awards Snubs

Staff - January 26, 2018

The nominations for the 90th Academy Awards were announced this week. We had Moviegoer writers share some of their favorites that weren’t on this year’s ballot.

Stephan Cho:

Best Supporting Actress — Tiffany Haddish, Girls Trip What a waste to have someone as charming as Tiffany Haddish announce the nominations (“All these titles make a woman from an urban area very uncomfortable” might be the most accurate description of the Best Documentary Short category) without honoring one of the most memorable comedic breakthroughs in recent memory. Haddish's 18-minute acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actress at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards gave fans a tease of what we won't be getting during the Oscars telecast this year.

Best Actor — Robert Pattinson, Good Time In a category with several welcome new faces, such as Call Me By Your Name’s Timothée Chalamet and Get Out’s Daniel Kaluuya, it would’ve been nice to see Robert Pattinson’s fearless performance in Good Time get some attention. Pattinson plays Connie, an opportunistic Queens native who takes advantage of everyone in his path after an ill-fated bank robbery with his mentally challenged younger brother. The Safdie Brothers’ gnarly crime thriller won’t be for everyone, but Pattinson never fails to keep you on edge.

Best Original Score — Oneohtrix Point Never, Good Time

Hannah Lazar:
